The Importance of Screening and Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer

  • Yonkers Riverfront Library 1 Larkin Center, Yonkers, NY (map)

Please join us for an evening devoted to your health! According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis for both women and men in the U.S., excluding skin cancers (www.cancer.org) Due to busy lives, caregiving responsibilities, and the tendency to focus on others before ourselves, many of us delay self-care, such as scheduling appointments for routine colon cancer screenings to detect cancers when they are most easily treated. Some of us are fearful of being screened, or we may not know how to best educate and protect ourselves to reduce the risks of being diagnosed with cancer in the first place. During this program we will discuss cancer prevention, cancer screenings, early detection and its barriers, and available community resources, including an opportunity for uninsured or underinsured participants to sign up for FREE colon cancer screenings provided by White Plains Hospital and breast cancer screenings provided by the Westchester Community Health Center. A light dinner will be served.

The educational session of this program, which will be presented in English and Spanish, will be presented by Cancer Support Community Greater NY & CT, the Westchester County Department of Health, Cancer Support Team, and the American Cancer Society.
